Antinori Releases Inaugural 2004 Pian delle Vigne Riserva

Marchesi Antinori of Tuscany has just released its first Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG from the famous Pian delle Vigne estate in Montalcino, Italy. The 2004 Pian delle Vigne Vignaferrovia Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG is a single-vineyard wine named for its hilltop location overlooking the picturesque 19th century railway (or ferrovia) that crosses the estate.

Crafted from 100% Brunello, the local Sangiovese clone, the 2004 Pian delle Vigne Riserva combines classic structure and full body with tremendous harmony and elegance. The wine is richly aromatic with spice, ripe berry and chocolate notes that lead to velvety tannins. This captivating wine can be enjoyed in its youth or aged for decades. A Pian delle Vigne Riserva will only be made in exceptional vintages.

As a leading producer of Brunello di Montalcino, Marchesi Antinori has been working on a Riserva for many years but only wanted to release a wine that met the family’s very high standards. 2004 was an excellent vintage in Montalcino and considered the best year to produce a Riserva. All the grapes arrived in the cellar in perfect condition.

The grape’s dense tannins have been masterfully managed through a unique barrel aging regimen that begins with 6 months in 3-hectoliter barrels, followed by 12 months in 30-hectoliter barrels, and finishing with an additional 12 months in 60-hectoliter barrels. The wine was aged for more than 6 months in bottle before release.

This limited-production wine will be available in New York, Florida and California at select restaurants and fine wine shops in October. Only 167 six-packs are being imported to the U.S. The wine will retail for $125.

The Pian delle Vigne estate is located in Tuscany just three and half miles south of Montalcino, the hilltop fortress town famous for its exceptional and much-revered Brunello di Montalicino.
