Marchese Piero Antinori Presented 28 Vintages of Solaia at June 3 Dinner in New York City

Florence, Italy

Antinori, one of the most prominent Italian winemaking families with a legacy that extends over 625 years, hosted an exclusive dinner at Eleven Madison Park on Monday, June 3. This exceptional event featured a complete vertical of the family’s most iconic Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, Solaia: a wine resulting from the evolution begun by Tignanello and produced only in the most stellar years.

Marchese Piero Antinori, the 25th generation and patriarch of the Antinori family hosted the evening by pulling wines from the Antinori’s private cellar for a once in a lifetime experience. Guiding the tasting alongside Marchese Piero Antinori was Renzo Cotarella, CEO & Chief Enologist for Marchesi Antinori, along with Antonio Galloni, esteemed wine writer and critic, editor of the new platform vinousmedia.com. Guests were given a chance to taste every vintage crafted of Solaia – a total of 28 – including the first wine produced in 1978 and a preview of the soon to be released 2010 vintage.

Solaia celebrates Chianti Classico’s ability to express Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc grapes and was conceived as a vineyard selection, originating in the 25 acre vineyard of the same name near the Tignanello vineyard. The original blend for the first 1978 vintage produced by Marchesi Antinori was made of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. This expression was repeated in 1979 and then, subsequent vintages introduced 20% Sangiovese. Over the years additional adjustments were made to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc percentages and ultimately have reached today’s precious blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc.

These extraordinary wines were paired with a masterfully prepared dinner by Eleven Madison Park’s Executive Chef, Daniel Humm. The evening was legendary as guests dined at one the most coveted dinner reservations in New York City, with a 3 Star Michelin Guide and 4 Star New York Times rating, and imbibed rare and timeless wines from the celebrated Antinori portfolio.
