Walla Walla, Wash.

After crafting two exceptional vintages in 2005 and 2006 as acting winemaker at Northstar, the luxury Merlot winery in Walla Walla, Dave Merfeld has been named head winemaker.

“Merf,” as he is known to all, has worked with the every vintage of Northstar since 2002, when the new winery opened. He has been both enologist and assistant winemaker, studying under legendary California winemaker Jed Steele, who is a consultant at Northstar.

Steele said, “Merf has what all great winemakers must have: A sixth sense about grape selection, and exacting standards when blending the best of the best from the vineyards.”

“The Northstar mission inspires me every day,” said Merfeld. “And that is to make one of the best Merlots in the world. Being able to pull fruit from the greatest Merlot blocks in the entire Columbia Valley is a huge advantage.”

He noted that he and Steele have also started making limited quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that have caught the attention of top critics.

“That’s just enhances what we are doing with Merlot,” Merfeld said. “Merlot will always be our main focus.”

Northstar’s first vintage was 1994. Critics consistently give it top ratings, and it finishes at the top of competitive tastings.
